Training and Certification of Officials:
There are four levels of certification administered nationally by the Canadian Football Officials Association (Canadian FOA). Each level is achieved through attendance at the approved training clinic, followed by a favorable on-field evaluation and satisfactory performance on the annual CFOA Rules Examination.
In order to officiate in any league, all members of the association are required to hold a minimum CFOA Level I certification (or be a first year official whom has completed the Level I course – with official certification pending).
The Calgary Football Officials Association offers Level I clinics annually, and Level II through IV clinics are held as necessary (attendance is by invitation when an official is deemed ready for advancement).
Level V is a local designation that is conferred on a Level IV official whom has worked a Vanier Cup.
TRAC is the Training, Rating, and Advancement Committee. Its mandate is to provide guidance in the areas of training and rating (identifying course conductors and on-field evaluators) and advancement (making recommendations for whom should be invited to level II and III training clinics).
TRAC is comprised of the CFOA president, the TRAC coordinator (CFOA executive position), the PFC and CIS supervisors, our CFOA assignor, and selected senior CFOA members.
It should be noted that advancement to level IV occurs solely by invitation from the PFC and CIS supervisors. Neither TRAC nor the CFOA executive make decisions on this level of advancement.
